WHAT IS GUNUNGAN?

DESCRIPTION:

Gunungan is a big flipped cone that made from bamboo as structure and contains some agriculture products. Some fruits and vegetables arranged to be looks like a mountain. That’s why it called as Gunungan (Mount).

Gunungan made in order to appreciate and thank to The Creator or God. It’s a part of a traditional ceremony in Java. Usually it held in special holy day or after harvesting day. It’s like a thanksgiving day in Western country. Gunungan also a part of some ceremony that held by Sultan or Kingdom in Java.

LOCATION:
Prambanan Temple.

Village (Desa): Prambanan
Sub-district (Kecamatan): Prambanan
Regency (Kabupaten): Klaten

About 20 km or 30 minutes to east from downtown Yogyakarta.

HOW TO GET TO PRAMBANAN TEMPLE?

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
There is a cheap public transport to get there. Trans Jogja Bus. Ticket only IDR 3,500. First, you must go to halte bus/bus stop/shelter of Trans Jogja. Then, you must reach to Prambanan halte. Then, you can take a walk to the temple.

From Adi Sutjipto Airpot :
please take Route 1A – Stop in Prambanan Shelter
From Tugu Railway Station :
please take Route 1A – Stop in Prambanan Shelter
From Giwangan Bus Station :
please take Route 3A – Stop in Airport(bandara) Shelter,
then please take Route 1A – Stop in Prambanan Shelter
From Jombor Bus Station :
please take Route 2B – Stop in Condongcatur Shelter,
then please take Route 3B – Stop in Airport Shelter,
then please take Route 1A – Stop in Prambanan Shelter

*) It’s free if you change the bus to Prambanan. Ask to the operator if you still confused. Operator will glad to give information. :-).

**) Trans Jogja operates from 5:30 AM until 9:30 PM

RAYAHAN (SEIZURE GUNUNGAN)

*) In the end of festival, usually followed by seizure Gunungan activity.

There are some nice cafe near the site.

*) The recommended cafe & restaurant nearby: Abhayagiri restaurant, Opak resto. The price quiet expensive for backpacker. But, they have awesome view and nice atmosphere.

**) The other option is Wedang Kopi Prambanan that surrounded by rice field.

DRESS CODE:
Polite dress.

*) Covered dress which is covering your legs and upside part. It’s a wise way to respect their ceremony by wearing the ‘polite’ dress. This ‘polite’ defined by local culture, not your culture.

PART OF GUNUNGAN

*) In the belief of Javanese (Yogyakarta people), people who get the goods in the form of agricultural products from the vegetables and fruits mountains (gunungan) that who will get the blessing.
