You have to walk around Sultan Palace complex together with other participant.

WHAT IS MUBENG BETENG?
Mubeng beteng is annual event for celebrating Javanese new year. This event become a tradition since hundreds years ago. In the past time, old people in Yogyakarta become participant to this event. But, today young people also join and become participant. The number of young people who join to this event increasing every years. All of participants walk together around Sultan Palace complex without talking or speak anything. This act symbolize to reflection of self about what we done in one year ago. The reflection act of self without speaking and walking around Sultan Palace complex hopes that we can feel and calm to see our problem and focus in our decision and step to solve the problem, to be a better man. A resolution for the next year.

MUBENG BETENG START:
At 12.00 AM (Midnight).
*) You have to arrive before that time for preparation and praying ceremony. It means you have to arrive on August 31st, 2019 at 10 PM.

AGENDA OF MUBENG BETENG RITUAL:
10.00 pm, August 31st, 2019 – Preparation of Sultan’s servants and royal attendants in front of Pagelaran Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat.
11.00 pm, August 31st, 2019 – Praying ceremony
00.00 am, September 31st, 2019 – Kyai Brajanala Bell in Regol Keben is rung 12 times to mark transition of the day.
00.01 am, September 31st, 2019 – Sultan’s servants and royal attendants start walk out for leading silent walk around Sultan Palace complex.

WHERE IS THE WALKING ROUTE?
ROUTE OF SILENT WALK:
Keben – Rotowijayan Street – Kauman Street – Agus Salim Street – Wahid Hasyim Street – Suryowijayan – Pojok Beteng Kulon – M.T. Haryono Street – Mayjen. Sutoyo Street – Pojok Beteng Wetan – Brigjen. Katamso Street – Ibu Ruswo Street – Alun-alun Utara.
WHERE IS IT?
Alun-alun Utara Kraton Yogyakarta.
WHAT IS ALUN-ALUN?
Alun-alun = Sultan’s palace field/park (square) that two banyan trees as center of field/park.
Utara/Lor = North. Sultan has two field/park. North and south park/field.
HOW TO GET TO ALUN-ALUN UTARA?
There is a cheap public transport to get there. Trans Jogja Bus. Ticket only IDR 4,000. First, you must go to halte bus/bus stop of Trans Jogja. Then, you must reach to Main Post office halte (halte Kantor Pos Besar) or Vredeburg Shelter (SO 1 Maret halte) , and then take a walk to museum. Ask to the operator if you still confused.

please take Route 1A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter (SO 1 Maret halte)
From Tugu Railway Station :
please take Route 1A or 2A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter (SO 1 Maret halte)

please take Route 3B – Stop in Pojok Beteng Wetan Shelter,
then please take Route 2B – Stop in Kantor Pos Besar Shelter
From Jombor Bus Station :
please take Route 2A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter (SO 1 Maret halte)
From Beteng Vredeburg Shelter (SO 1 Maret halte):
please take a walk to the museum
*) Trans Jogja operates from 5:30 AM until 9:30 PM
**) Better you rent a motorcycle because no public transport in the middle of the night except online taxi such as Go-jek, Grab, conventional taxi and tricycle.

*) If you ever heard ‘The Day of Silence’ in Bali, it has the same meaning actually. A reflection day or a resolution to face a new year. No wonder Java and Bali has the same tradition in the past. But, everything has changed since Java decided to be an islamic Kingdom (Sultan). Even Javanese Lunar calendar also change into islamic lunar calendar since Sultan Agung period. That’s why Javanese lunar calendar become different than Balinese calendar.
