DESCRIPTION:

Mount Merbabu, Gunung Merbabu (literally Ashes Mountain in Indonesian/Javanese), is non active stratovolcano located in Central Java, Indonesia. The exact location is in the north of Merapi volcano. Mount Merbabu located in the border of some regencies (Kabupaten) in Central Java such as Boyolali, Magelang, Semarang and Salatiga.

Merbabu eruptions recorded in 1560 and 1797. After the eruption all the ashes spread in Java island. Thus, this mount popular as “Ashes Mountain” or local people called it as Merbabu.

HIKING POST (BASECAMP):

There are eleven tracks or hiking post (basecamp) to reach the summit of Mt Merbabu. Here five most popular tracks:

1. SELO HIKING POST

This hiking post (basecamp) located in 1830 meter above the sea level. This hiking post is the most common/popular track to reach the Merbabu summit. Selo is the name of a village in Boyolali district, Central Java. Selo Village located between Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi. So that this village used as start point of the climb for Mount Merbabu and also Mount Merapi. Hiking Mount Merbabu through Selo hiking post (basecamp) offering views: forest, savanna & steppe, hills, etc.

HOW TO GET TO SELO HIKING POST (BASECAMP)?

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
There is a cheap public transport to get there. First, Trans Jogja Bus. Ticket only IDR 4,000. You must go to halte bus/bus stop of Trans Jogja. Then, you must reach to Jombor bus station (Terminal Jombor) or (halte Jombor), and then change bus to Semarang city, ticket about IDR30,000. Then you ask to “kernet” (The man whom you will pay the bus ticket) that you will stop on Muntilan. Then, change a bus to Ketep Pass and change again to Selo village.
Ask to the operator if you still confused. Operator will glad to give information. 🙂

***) Wekas track is popular as slippery track. Especially when you climb down back to Wekas basecamp. Many hikers report has slipped and sliding experience when climb down. Well, it was happened on me too.

3. KOPENG HIKING POST

Kopeng has two hiking post (Basecamp) located in Tekelan and Cuntel. These hiking post are the longest track to reach the Merbabu summit. Hiking Mount Merbabu through Kopeng hiking post (basecamp) offering views: forest, water source (wet season), tower, hills, valley, crater, etc.

HOW MUCH TIME TO REACH THE MERBABU SUMMIT?

HIKING TIME:
About 8-12 hours for amateurs.
About 6-8 hours for pro and has good stamina.

Warm jacket and rain coat.

WHEN THE BEST TIME FOR MERBABU HIKING?

OVERNIGHT HIKING:
08.00 PM Start from Selo (basecamp) hiking post.

*) Night hiking is the best way to catch the beautiful sunrise on the top of the Mount.

BEST MONTH FOR CLIMBING:
Juli – September

*) Those month almost no rain. The track are dry and little dusty, you may wear masker when climbing.

**) On rain season, the weather is unpredictable. On dry season, the forest and savanna easy to burn. Trust to the local authority that give permit to hike is a wise choice.

***) On August 16th, it will be so crowded hiking because the local people hike this Mount and celebrate the independence day on the summit in the next day. Better you avoid hiking on this day and one day after.

*) All Mount Merbabu track or hiking post (basecamp) closed to any hiking activities from October 8th, 2018 until October 31st, 2018 due to maintaining environment along the track.
