You can find bike/motorcycle/scooter rental in downtown or backpacker street. There are so many motorcycle rental. They offering matic or semi auto motorcycle.

The rate about IDR60 000 per day or Rp60 000/day.
If you rent for 1 week/month, you will get cheap price.

*) Don’t forget to ask brown paper (letter for scooter/motorcycle) / STNK.

**) Better you have international drive license. But, if you don’t have drive license, it’s ok since you drive in Yogyakarta province area. The police won’t catch you. Unlike Bali, the police here more friendly to the international traveler/tourist.

***) Check the letter, is tax paid for a year. Otherwise, police will catch you and ask some money. It will happened in the outside of  Yogyakarta province such as Muntilan, Magelang, Purworejo, Klaten, Solo, etc.

****) The most important before you rent a scooter, make sure that you are get used to Asia (crazy) traffic. So, probability of accident can be reduced.

*) I recommend “Pamitran” scooter rental for traveler. I have checked the office and their service. It more than other scooter rental can be offer. Here some reason:

1. Free charges drop off the scooter to your hotel. Even you ask to the airport, they will do.
2. Friendly service operator and able to speak in english.
3. Scooter condition in good performance.
4. Helmet washed in every week.
5. Experience since 2009.

  1. Josh

I think the rate has increase to IDR60 000 and some IDR70 000 per day depending on motor type and rental company. I’d managed to rent 1 week for IDR300 000. Inclusive of sending to Guest House on first day and send to airport on last day

    1. kunzyogya Post author

Thanks for update the rate rental, Josh.
Well, it depend on type, condition and time.
Sometime the rate change in Indonesian holiday.
      But, actually everything is negotiable/bargainable.
If you can do good negotiation, you will get cheap price.

      1. Josh

        Hi Esther,

Sorry I can’t recall now but you can do a google search for ‘Jogjakarta’ or ‘Yogyakarta’ plus ‘motorbike rental’.

Some guest houses also rents out.

    2. Wes

Do they ask to hold on to your passport? Bali they just made a copy, but a friend tells me they want the original in Yogyakarta, but that’s not something we normally do, causes risks for identity fraud and scams, pay this if you want it back and you need it back to fly home.

      1. kunzyogya Post author

        Hi Wes,
I just ask to some bike/scooter rental in Yogyakarta (Jogja).
Some of them want the original of your passport.
But, some of them also don’t mind with a copy of your passport.
Well, you can choose which one is suitable for you.
Pamitran is one of bike rental company that you can give a copy of your passport.

Unlike Bali, it’s hard to find 250cc scooter rental in Yogyakarta.
The most common are 100cc -150cc.
      For 250cc i found here:
But, after i called them, seems they are not friendly.
Maybe because i call him in the late evening.
I called him on 9.30 pm. Maybe that time he is going to rest.
You can tray to contact him:
      +6281311509456 or +62274-888193 (Office).

  5. KS

Hi Kunzyogya, your website really helpful. I willhave travel Yogya early of February 2017. May I know hot the weather over there if I plan my trip with motobike. I will stay in Indies Heritage Prawirotaman Jalan Prawirotaman 3 No.625, for about a week. Can they deliver the motorbike there? Also, is Malaysia driving license accepted? Thank you inadvance.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi KS,

Thank you for visiting my website.
On February is wet season or monsoon.
If raining, you can wear poncho when driving a motorbike/scooter.
Around Prawirotaman st you will found so many motorbike rental.
Also some hotel will help you finding scooter rental.

Unlike in Bali, Yogyakarta police are friendly to international tourist.
So, you don’t have to worry about that.
Only some area that outside of Jogja maybe such as Muntilan or area before Borobudur.

  6. Chin

Kunz, I’m KS. Thank for your post, it really help. I will travel to Yogya on 31 Jan 2017. May I know how the weather in Yogya? Would you advice me plan my trip via motorbike during therethe day? Also, I plan travel via Googlemap, how the internet coverage if I plan ride motorbike to Borobudur, Prambanan, Gao Rencang Kencono? Thanks in advance.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi Chin,

I already answer the same question above this comment.
      You can check it.

You will need “Waze application” not “Google map”.
It’s better in here. Also can do offline.
If you use “Google maps” as your guidance in here,
      sometime you will get lost.
It happened to many driver and my friends in Jogja.

Come on Google! You can do better! Or you just only concern to the project that making money for you? 😀

Anyway, you will need Local SIM card that support for your needs.
So, you can use “Waze” online.
      Here my recommendation:

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi Nguyen,

Better you don’t publish your number in here.
Here the whatsapp number of “Pamitran” bike/scooter rental:
      +62 811 2555 210

    1. kunzyogya Post author

Sorry, we don’t have Line ID.
We just use one chat apps for easy reason.
Better you install Whatsapp and try to chat with the scooter rental services.

  7. Yohan

    I don’t have bike license.
Can i ask if, instead of renting a car with driver, i can rent a bike with driver to ride me around?

I am a solo traveler so it’s expensive for me to rent the whole car.

  8. Adrian Montoro

My friend and I need to rent 2 motorcycle for one week. We have our european driving license. Do we need to get an international driving license? We are planning to move around Java, from Yogyakarta to Probolinggo and back.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

I think you can use european driving license,
you don’t have to get an international driving license.

What you have to concern is police in the some city will looking for your mistake,
they will ask some money for you cause your mistake.
Especially when your bike across the white line.
      They will chase you.
Like in the street around forest of Ngawi regency.
It’s already popular for some bikers.
Also you have to worry about our traffic and our road.
The traffic sometime unpredictable since we don’t have good education for driving.
Also we have some holes in the some street.
      Take care and drive safely.

      1. Adrian Montoro

Thank you for your answer! One more question: do you know if it is possible to rent a motorbike in Yogyakarta and leave it in another place of Java?

        1. kunzyogya Post author

          I think is not possible.
The motorbike rental or the owner won’t let you to do that.
It will be any fee to take the motorbike coming back to Yogyakarta again.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

I think is ok as long you have driving license.
Even it just local state driving license, not international driving license.

Hi Kunzyogya, my partner and I are planning to go around Yogyakarta, starting from Magelang, Kulon Progo, Gunung Kidul and back to the city center. Do you think it’s possible and safe enough to travel to those places with bike?

Plus we both don’t have bike licence and most rental make it as a requirement. Do you know some rental that will be okay with that? Will it cause any problem on the road, especially with the police?

    1. kunzyogya Post author

I think is possible to travel to those places with bike.
But, you have to worry about our road and traffic.
Some street have holes and you need to get used with our ‘crazy’ traffic.

If you don’t have license that’s could be a problem.
The police sometime checking the license and the letter in some places.
      We called it ‘operasi’.
This month police often doing ‘operasi’.

You can ask or whatsapp the Pamitran bike rental.

  14. Vishakha

Hello, I and my friend are planning to visit pandmnabhan temple, Borobudur and all near by place in Yogyakarta.. so can you please suggest is it safe to travel on bike? And I’ve Indian license, so do I need an international license?

    1. kunzyogya Post author

Yes, it’s safe to travel on bike.
But, Borobudur is out of Yogyakarta province.
      It’s on Central Java province.
Sometime the Police looking for your mistake.
They will ask money for the end.
So, you have to be careful and at least you have to prepare International license.
But, in Yogyakarta province it’s safe.
      The Police are friendly.
Even if you make a mistake or break traffic signs,
      they don’t charge you money.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

I don’t have any scooter rental business.
But, you can ask to Pamitran scooter rental.
They can deliver the scooter to your hotel.

IDR 70K per day (24 hours).
      Term & condition:
      – International driving license

    1. kunzyogya Post author

The normal price for bike rent around IDR 60K-75K per day.
