KAUMAN RAMADHAN MARKET (5 May – 4 June 2019) – A Hunting of Local Food, Snack and Dessert in Kauman’s Narrow Street

DESCRIPTION:

Ramadhan is a name of month in Islamic calendar that based on Lunar calendar. Ramadhan believed as a holy month for moslem (Islam people). Usually they will fasting from dawn to dusk. This fasting become a one of ritual of moslem praying in Ramadhan.

Kauman as a moslem village since Yogyakarta Sultanate established become a part of islam history in Yogyakarta area. The existence of Kauman village and Grand Kauman mosque did not necessarily erase local culture before Islam officially became a religion in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. Even the acculturation process occurred.

The acculturation process occurs in all aspects of life. For example, ceremony in Sultan palace, Hijriyah (moslem) calendar that applied in Sultan era, the Arabic letter (Jawi) that applied in Sultan palace and Yogyakarta society, Impromptu market, etc. Even it applies also in local snacks and desserts such as Bakpia. This local snack experienced changes in the ingredients after the sultanate established. They replace pork with green beans.

Kauman Ramadhan market as impromptu market become popular in Ramadhan month. This market serving moslem people who want to break fasting in the dusk time. All the local foods, snacks and dessert sold here. Some of the snacks here has been created since hundreds years ago and become a tradition of breaking the fasting. This local market also become a target for food traveler and food enthusiast when visiting Yogyakarta city.

HOW TO GET TO THE LOCATION?

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
There is a cheap public transport to get there. Trans Jogja Bus. Ticket only IDR 3,600. First, you must go to halte bus/bus stop/shelter of Trans Jogja. Then, you must reach to Beteng Vredeburg or Kantor Pos Besar halte (halte Kantor Pos Besar), and then take a walk to Kauman. Ask to the operator if you still confused.

From Adi Sutjipto Airport :
please take Route 1A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter
Then, take a walk to Kauman market
From Tugu Railway Station :
please take Route 1A or 2A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter
Then, take a walk to Kauman market
Or you can just walk to the south from the Tugu railway station
From Giwangan Bus Station :
please take Route 3B – Stop in Pojok Beteng Wetan Shelter,
then please take Route 2B – Stop in Kantor Pos Besar Shelter
then, take a walk to Kauman market
From Jombor Bus Station :
please take Route 2A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter
Then, take a walk to Kauman market

*) Trans Jogja operates from 5:30 AM until 9:30 PM

**) If your stay far away from Trans Jogja bus stop, you can hire an online taxi motor like Go-Jek or Grab. But, you have to install the apps first. The driver can not speak english and you may call him as crazy driver because you don’t get used with our ‘crazy’ traffic.

*) If you are a Vegan and Vegetarian you don’t have to worry about the food. Some merchant selling fruits and sell boiled vegetables with peanut sauces that called Pecel.

THE KICAK

*) Kicak is an authentic food from Kauman village. Maybe it categorized as a dessert. It made from sticky rice, coconut flakes and small slice of jackfruit. You should try this ‘Kicak’ when visiting Kauman market.

*) Kauman market is interesting market and you should visit it if your visit in the same time with Ramadhan month. So many local food, snacks and dessert. Very interesting!
