WHAT IS GREBEG SAWAL?

DESCRIPTION:

Grebeg Sawal performed by the Sultan Palace to mark Eid Mubarak. Grebeg Sawal held after praying together in the Gede Kauman mosque in the morning. On this occasion, the palace and the army courtiers participated in it.

Grebeg ritual of the Eid Mubarak begins with the release of the Yogyakarta court accompaniment force consisting of soldiers Wirobrojo, Ketanggung, Bugis, Daeng, Patangpuluh, Nyutro. They wore colorful uniforms and attributes while carrying traditional weapons spears, keris, and ancient rifles.

Grebeg event start from the palace, bringing five ‘Gunungan’ passing the square to the north and ended up in the courtyard of the Great Mosque grebeg Kauman. The other Grebeg bringing to Pakualaman palace and Kepatihan Governor office. Annual celebration, many people who participated in it. They waited since grebeg starts until ‘rayahan’ or seizure/struggling the ‘Gunungan’ completed.

In the belief of Yogyakarta people or Javanese, people who got the things/goods in the form of agricultural products such as vegetables or fruits in the mountains form or cones (Gunungan) that who will get the blessing.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
There is a cheap public transport to get there. Trans Jogja Bus. Ticket only IDR 3,600. First, you must go to halte bus/bus stop/shelter of Trans Jogja. Then, you must reach to Beteng Vredeburg or Kantor Pos Besar halte (halte Kantor Pos Besar), and then take a walk to ALUN-ALUN UTARA. Ask to the operator if you still confused.
Operator will glad to give information. :-)

From Adi Sutjipto Airport :
please take Route 1A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter
Then, take a walk to Alun-alun Utara or Gede Kauman mosque
From Tugu Railway Station :
please take Route 1A or 2A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter
Then, take a walk to Alun-alun Utara or Gede Kauman mosque
Or you can just walk to the south from the Tugu railway station
From Giwangan Bus Station :
please take Route 3B – Stop in Pojok Beteng Wetan Shelter,
then please take Route 2B – Stop in Kantor Pos Besar Shelter
then, take a walk to Alun-alun Utara or Gede Kauman mosque
From Jombor Bus Station :
please take Route 2A – Stop in Beteng Vredeburg Shelter
Then, take a walk to Alun-alun Utara or Gede Kauman mosque

*) Trans Jogja operates from 5:30 AM until 9:30 PM

**) If your stay far away from Trans Jogja bus stop, you can order taxi motor online like Go-Jek or Grab. But, you have to install the apps first. The driver can not speak english and you may call him as crazy driver because you don’t get used with our ‘crazy’ traffic.

*) Some Yogyakarta/Javanese people believed that if they took agricultural product from big cones or ‘Gunungan’, they will got blessing.
