WHAT IS DIENG CULTURE FESTIVAL?

DESCRIPTION:

The main event is a shaving off ceremony of dreadlocks of children who born with this unique hair. The ritual is known as Ruwatan anak gembel/gimbal. The globally dreadlock hair is commonly known as Rastafarian style from Jamaica. But, here in the highlands of Dieng, dreadlock hair is not a chosen style but rather a mystifying feature that only occured in children of the Dieng plateau. Dieng’s dreadlocks kids were born with normal hair, but somehow their hair amazingly turns into dreadlocks all by itself. Various studies to scientifically investigated the cause have not resulted in any logical explanation.

According to local belief, however, these kids are somehow chosen by the Dieng ancestors to accept these gifts. The dreadlocks may, therefore, not be trimmed unless the children themselves ask for it, or they want shaving off with one condition that must be fulfilled by their parents. Sometime they ask unusual request as condition. Such as helicopter, tank, gold, diamond, etc. In this case it means it’s not their time to be shaved off. If their parents forced for shaving off, then something bad will be happened. The dreadlocks children will be sick or the village will have a disaster. After shaving off ceremony, the shaven off hair will be taken to the lake and submerged here as symbol of returning the hair back to the ancestors.

Today Government Tourism Board combined this event with the art & music festival and named it as Dieng Culture Festival. It’s good idea since it makes the tourists stay longer and they can also feel the atmosphere in Dieng plateau, their culture, heritage temple and local cuisine for sure.
