ALI BABA (24-31 May 2019) – An Art Exhibition

DESCRIPTION:

Ali Baba is a fairy tale from Persia at the time of Sultan Harun Al Rasyid was very famous and popular in his day. This fairy tale is really very interesting, not only for children but adults also like it.

Ali Baba is a story that has many moral messages implied in each of Ali Baba’s stories. For example, “Share with others, do not be stingy”, “Greed will cause problems”, “Anyone who intends evil will turn to him”, “Do not be jealous and greedy because greed only causes trouble in life.” and “Do good to others, then your kindness will be rewarded in a way that we don’t expect.”

For this reason, Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta displays images that accompany or illustrate Ali Baba’s story. Especially for this exhibition, the illustrations we exhibited were taken from the Arabicisch Nachtiverstellingen book, the story of which was retold by Laurence Housman and published by Amsterdam Van Holkema & Warendorf. In addition, we also showcase some illustrative works from other Arabic stories, such as Sinbad the Sailor, and Aladin with Testament Lights.
