      You’re welcome.
Hahaha…it just a page contain information about how to extend visa for backpacker/traveler.
I have no idea that God ask for this.
It just a page and an information.
I just want to help (share) to each others. 😉

  1. Fernandel

Hi, thank you for all the informations. Some people told me I will need a “sponsor” (A local person from Indonesia) to do a visa extension. Is that true ?

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi Fernandel,

For all kind of Visa you need “a sponsor” of a local person or Indonesian.
Sponsor is the person in charge who ensure you won’t do any criminals in Indonesia.
Or person in charge if something happened to you.

There are many kind of Visa:
Visa for tourism visit, visa for family visit, visa for student, visa for business,
visa for social visit, visa for journalist, etc.
For Visa for tourism visit, your travel agency is your “sponsor” actually.

If you come from the country that categorized free Visa country,
You can not extend your visa.
It means you have to leave from Indonesia or you can pay the overstay.
      Around IDR 300k per day.

There is also another kind of Visa,
      Visa on arrival (VOA).
You pay visa when you landed in the airport.
You can extend this kind of visa,
but you don’t need a “sponsor”.

Hi! I’m on my way to Yogayakarta to extend my visa. I see you say you need a sponsor and that my “travel agency” can be my sponsor. What do you mean by this? The company I booked my flight with or the hostel I am staying in?
        Many thanks.

        1. kunzyogya Post author

A “Sponsor” is a local people (guarantor) who ensure/guarantee that you do not something bad (criminals) or ensure that you won’t bankrupt (no money) in Indonesia. Also it defined as a local people who charges if something happened to you such as lost, accident, death, victim, etc.

You can ask the man or the manager or the room boy in your hostel to be your “Sponsor” to extend your Visa in Indonesia.

            Hi Kunzyogya,

thnaks very much for the great and clear post !

One question if you don’t mind: Do we mandatorily need a sponsor ? Most of us are coming on holidays…

            Thnaks again!

          2. kunzyogya Post author

For any kind of Visa, ‘a sponsor’ is a mandatory to do visa extension.
You need a local people to be your sponsor.

            You’re welcome!

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      You’re right. 🙂
And don’t wear flip flop sandals.
Last time me and my friend visit ‘Immigration office’ to make a passport,
my friend forbidden to process it because he was wearing flip flop sandals.
Better you wear shoes and long pants.
It’s a kind of visitor manners who visit government office.

    2. Guillaume Peytavin

I want to do a VOA for my whole family (wife + 2 kids). When can I come alone, and when do i have to come with all my family, as there is 3 visits.

If I understand, it should be mandatory for them to come only at the 2nd visit?

      Thank you

      1. kunzyogya Post author

        Hello Guillaume,

Yes, there will be three times visits to extend your VOA.
I think yes for the 2nd visit is mandatory since the officer will ask you for fingerprints and photo session.
For the 1st and 3rd visit you can represent your family as long you bring their Passport and the documents.
This is also happens when you use a Visa agency.
You just need to come on the 2nd visits.
The 1st and 3rd visits handled by Visa agency.

  2. shelley hart

    This is great help… Thanks!
I have a social visa to extend… Have nornally used agents when in Bali. I’m now in Jogja.
I know most of the process… I think.
Do you know if I can just use KTP card of sponsor, or do I need family card too?
    Terima Kasih

    1. kunzyogya Post author

I have to go to Immigration office first.
      But, today is weekend.
      The office is closed.
I will visit it on monday.
Then i will give the info to you.

Ok, i just from the immigration office.
You just need KTP card of your sponsor, no need Family card (KK).
Also you need to fill the form of extension.
      I will upload the form.
So, you can see how it looks like.

  3. Martin Rienesl

    Important updates:

The office is open from 07:00-14:00, but tickets are only produced between 07:00 and 10:00 to foreigners. Should you get rejected (for whatever reason), keep your ticket, because this legitimates you to come back later (until 14:00) for providing the missing/new documents. Note, that you have to wait until all “regular” tickets are processed, then you will magically get called by your old number by the staff (not the screen)

    – Copy (both sides) of the sponsors passport
    – The usual “Sponsor Letter” will be not accepted! You will receive 2 additional forms, which have to be filled out by your sponsor. If he is with you, remember to bring a tax stamp with you as well, because it is needed on one of the forms
If you use lowercase letters, a blue pen, TippEx© or any other form off correction (strike through), your form will get rejected.

4a) Pay the received bill at any bank (BRI, BNI, etc.) before 5)!

    1. kunzyogya Post author

Thank you for the updates, Martin.
I think your information will be useful for the blog reader.
Seems the Yogyakarta Immigration office has released new policy.
They change the opening hours and the flow process little bit.
I really appreciated for the updates from you, Martin.
Thank you and have a nice day!

  4. Caroline

I have to do a Visa extension (tourist visa). I’m actually in Surabaya but i dont understant the « sponsor person » … does some agency can do it for me ?

    1. kunzyogya Post author

Off course some agency can do it for you.
But, you can ask the local person to help you and reduce a cost for agency.

    2. Sam

      Thanks for this page

I’m on via will go for 30 day extension
      What is exit ticket

And copy can be made there or before take Xerox of passport and flight ticket ?

If exit ticket is travel ticket fly out of Indonesia? So must book out ticket for extension?

      1. kunzyogya Post author

Yes, exit ticket is travel ticket fly out of Indonesia.
The Immigration office just make sure that you stay not more than 30 extension day.

There is a photocopy service near the scooter parking space in Yogyakarta Immigration office.
But, sometime it’s full of people.
You need to queue to copy your documents.
I suggest you to prepare the document before arrive their office.
You can copy the document at outside.
Then you can continue the Visa extension process.
Good luck and have a fluent process!

  5. Jade Morgan

This page is so helpful, thank you! I do have one question if someone could please help me out! I will need to get my Visa On Arrival (VOA) extended while in Yogyakarta as it is the only place where i’ll be staying for longer than 4 nights and it’ll be easier to go back and forth to the immigration centre.
However, I’m in Yogyakarta around the 13th/14th August and I arrive in Indonesia on 31st July. Will I be allowed to extend my visa if I’ve only been in the country for 2 weeks or will they tell me to come back at a later date? Thank you!

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      You’re welcome.
Well, i think it’s ok if you want to extend your Visa On Arrival when you been in the country for 2 weeks.
I think you don’t need come back at a later date.

I saw the tourist/traveler in Bali also do the same.
They come to Bali immigration office on two weeks before their expire date of Visa.
If Bali immigration office allow you to extend your visa,
it should be applied in all regency in Indonesia,
      Include Yogyakarta.
So, you should be able to extend your VOA in Yogyakarta.

  6. Baldpacker

I’ve been reading that now there is an online queue system for obtaining your place in line but I can’t seem to find the place to actually join the queue!?! Does anyone have information on that?

    1. kunzyogya Post author

The online queue system is applied for local who request a new Passport.
There is no online queue system for the foreigner who want to apply Visa extension.
You need to visit the Immigration office.
There will be specific room for foreigner to extend the Visa.
Don’t worry there is no long queue for foreigner who want to extend the Visa.
Unlike Bali Immigration office, Yogyakarta Visa extending is more quiet.

  7. N S

Hi I was just wondering if the 30-day extension is from the end of the current visa or from the issue date?

For example my fiancé’s visa ends on 8 September. Will the 30-day extension end on 8 October or will it be 30 days from the issue date of the visa extension?

    1. kunzyogya Post author

The 30-days extension is automatically start from the end of the current Visa.
Your fiance visa extension will be end on 8th October.

  8. Rémi

Today the office opened at 7.30 am. Better go tere early as there was already a lot of people at 7 am.

I wasn’t able to do my extension as i just arived in Indonesia one week ago, the officer said i have to come back from 14 days before the end of my visa on arrival.

You don’t need a sponsor if you’re on a visa on arrival.

I hope this information can help.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hello Remi,

Thank you for share information and your experience.
It’s very useful and helpful for the traveler who want to extend visa in Yogyakarta immigration office.
Thank you and i really appreciated it.
      Have a great day!

  9. Blair

What happens if you screw up and havnt lodged your visa extension prior to the 7 days before your VISA expires?

I have the VOA stamp on my passport but I understand that I still need to go through this process. But I realized I only have 4 days.

Do I just have to leave?

I’m due to leave on the 15th anyway but still those few days… :/

    1. kunzyogya Post author

I think 7 days is fine since the whole process will take 4 days only.
So, you still have a time to extend your VISA.
Even if i compared in Bali,
the Bali immigration office ask you to submit the VOA extension application 7 (seven) days before it’s expiry date.
The process in Bali immigration office is longer than Yogyakarta immigration office due to a lot of tourist/traveler.
So, 7 (seven) days before it’s expiry date is fine for you to extend the VOA.
Just go and arrive in the Yogyakarta immigration office on 7 AM and bring all the documents.

  10. ys

You forgot to mention * bring black pen* on your list as the don’t always have one ready. Blue is not accepted apparently:)

  11. craveion

do you happen to know about extending a journalist visa? is it the same requirements?
how many times do you need to come for the process?

    thanks in advance!

    1. kunzyogya Post author

For your question i will visit and ask to them.
I will visit it on monday since tomorrow is saturday and it closed on weekend.
So, on monday you’ll get answer of your question.

      Update comments:
For the requirements are the same, but there are additional requirements such as:
      1. Permit from the Indonesia Ministry of Communication and Information.
      2. The sponsor is the branch office of the media (news agency) in Indonesia.
      3. ID card (KTP) of the member of the personnel department of the branch office of the media (news agency).
      4. Copy your passport and the flight ticket.

You need three times to come for the whole process. It same like others.
      First visit:
Bring all the document & requirements, fill the form and apply it.
      Second visit:
      Take a picture and fingerprint.
      Third visit:
      Take your passport.

  12. Jimbo

    Dear Kunzyogya,

Thank you very much for making this detailed guide. I have a question that I cannot seem to find the answer to.

    1. Are you allowed to visit multiple Islands on a journalism visa?

    2. Is it possible to convert a journalism visa to a tourist visa without leaving Indonesia?

Best regards and thank you for your help!

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Dear Jimbo,

Unfortunately i’m in Bali right now.
Maybe in next month i go back to Jogja.
Then i will visit Yogyakarta immigration office and ask your question.
But, maybe i can ask it in Bali immigration office.

      Update comment:
I just visited Bali immigration office.
      Here the answer:
      1. It depends on permit of ministry of communication and information (Menkominfo). Which area/island you allowed to work.
      2. You change journalism visa into tourist visa or socio culture visa. But, it won’t work in the vice versa.

  13. Bibi

Thx for all the valuable informations. I am going to add my humble contribution. I entered Indonesia 12 days ago with a visa on arrival. I went to immigration yesterday because I wanted to do the extension already. It was not possible. You can start asking for extension 14 days before the end of the VAO, NOT BEFORE.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi Bibi,

I trying to understand your statement.
      Is it VAO or VOA?
Do you mean i should write:
asking for extension 14 days AFTER the end of the VOA?

      My statement:
      1. I never wrote that statement. It was Remi who shared his/her experienced after visited Yogyakarta Immigration office.
      2. If you change word: ‘before’ to ‘after’ in that statement, it will looks like this: You can start asking for extension 14 days after the end of the VOA. It means your Visa expired already, you can’t extend your Visa. Even they will charge you for some money as a penalty regulation.

Let me know what you thinking.
Meanwhile, i will ask it to Immigration officer when i have chance to visit Yogyakarta Immigration office.
      Thank you for your contribution.

  14. George

Hello and thanks for the info in this thread, @kunzyogya!

I am planning on staying in Indonesia for 6 months and i understand its best to get a Visa on Arrival once I arrive, that i can extend only once. I am trying to find better solutions for me except making a ‘visa run’ each time the extension runs out. The Social Visa seems the perfect solution but I do not know the process of getting one. So:

Can I apply for a Social Visa once I’m in Yogyakarta? (or do i need to do that in my country (Romania)
What exactly do i need to have in order to apply?
How long would it take for the visa to be approoved?

If you would be so kind to let me know more about the Social Visa, or better solutions to my issue, I would really appreciate it. ^

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hello George (Andrei),

I think apply a Social-culture Visa is the right choice because it is valid for 60 days or 2 months.
Then you can extend it for next 2 months.

Better you apply it in your country (Romania), then you can extend it here (Indonesia).

You need a Sponsor letter and copy of Sponsor passport.
A Sponsor defined as a local person (guarantor) who ensure/guarantee that you won’t do something bad (criminals) or person who ensure that you won’t bankrupt (no money) in Indonesia. Also it defined as a local person who charges if something happened to you such as lost, accident, death, victim, etc.
For your convenience i will provide you a Sponsor letter.
Then you can send it to your Sponsor in Indonesia.
Ask him/her to fill the form or change the “red words”.
Also don’t forget to put stamp and a sign.
Then send it back to you.
Then you go to Indonesia embassy in your country.
Bring these Sponsor letter and copy of Sponsor passport.
Also bring your Document (ID Card, Passport, etc).
      Apply your Social Culture Visa.
Then wait a few days until it approved.

I’m not sure how long your Social Culture Visa will be approved.
      Every Embassy could be different.
Depend on Applicant number, total officer, etc.

I hope it’s answer your question.

  15. Quinpie

    Hi Kunzyogya,

Thanks for all the extensive info in regards to visa extensions.

I have a Social Visit Visa B211A and would like to extend this visa.
My original sponsor lives in Labuan Bajo.
I have understand that the sponsor need to live in the area where you extend your visa.

    1. I would like to extend my visa in Yogyakarta can I use my same sponsor from Labuan Bajo?

    2. If I can use the same sponsor, does he need to be present in person when I apply for the extension at the Immigration Office

    3. I will be able to get a sponsor from Yogyakarta region when I can’t use the LBJ sponsor, does he need to be present in person at the immigration office when I apply for the extension in Yogyakarta.

    4. I have a Letter available from the LBJ sponsor which stated that he will authorise the Yogyakarta sponsor to take over sponsorship with stamp. Will this be sufficient enough for the Immigration office

    5. Which documents do I need to apply for the extension of the B211a visa and to change sponsor?

    6. Can I get the 2 forms upfront or find online which need to be filled out by the sponsor and require the stamp. For extension I don’t need a new sponsor Letter but, only those two forms, is that correct?

Sorry, for the many questions :), I would highly appreciate your help to avoid discrepancies and or being send away.

Many thanks and have a nice day.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi Quinpie,

      1. I don’t think you can use Labuan Bajo sponsor to extend Social Visa (211) in Yogyakarta Immigration office.
From my experience in Bali, i can’t extend my friend’s Social Visa (211) in Bali Immigration office because my ID Card declare that i living in Yogyakarta.

      2. You don’t need him to be present because he can’t to be your sponsor in Yogyakarta Immigration office.

      3. Yes, he need to be present in person at Yogyakarta Immigration office (Sponsor must come).

      4. I told you that Labuan Bajo sponsor can’t to be your sponsor in Yogyakarta Immigration office wen you apply for Visa extension.

      5. All the documents you need already explain clearly in the article above. Please, kindly read and check it carefully.

      6. I don’t think you can get the forms from online. Your sponsor need to come, fill the forms, put the stamp (Materai) and give a sign.
I think you still need a new sponsor letter.

      You’re welcome!

      Roni Kunz

  16. Quinpie

    @Kunzyogya again,

I have read your thread of the Bali Extension requirements and seen that for a B211a visa you require many documents of which also the following.

    No. 2. A Sponsorship Letter
    No. 3. A Guarantee Letter

    1. What are the differences in these Letters and do you have templates?

    2. Can I only apply for extension 14 days before expiry of my B211a visa or also earlier. For example after 30 days into the visa and 30 days before expiry of my visa. So, halfway.
I won’t be in Yogyakarta exactly 7-14 days before expiry of my visa. Probably much earlier.

    Thanks again.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      @Quinpie again,

      1. Sponsorship Letter:
A letter that a local (Indonesian) apply to be your Sponsor.

      Guarantee Letter:
A letter that a Sponsor declare to be a guarantee/guarantor if something happen to you.
Such as bankrupt, broke the rules, criminals, lost, accident, death, etc.
This letter should be with Stamp (Materai) and a sign of the Sponsor.
I don’t have template of Guarantee Letter.
But, i have a Sponsorship Letter.
I already provide it in the end of this article.
Please, kindly read and check it carefully.

      2. You can’t apply Visa extension earlier.
      They will turn you away.
