Hi! I’m planning to do this trip two weeks from now but I’m a solo backpacker. Would you know if I can just go there and hope they’ll find someone I can join a group tour with?

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi, Marie.
Yes, you can just go there and share the cost with other tourist.
Just like what Hongkong couchsurfer did.
He found two Australian, then he offering for sharing jeep merapi tour.
Then they doing the tour and pay only Rp100.000 per person.

On weekend or Indonesian holiday, you will found it easy to meet other tourist.
Especially two weeks from now, it’s X-mas holiday. 🙂

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi,

      It’s possible to do that.
But, in some case like weekend or Indonesian holiday,

Better you call/inform ‘mas Eko’ or ask me to booking the slots.
      It’s free, no deposit.

      Cheers.

Hai, nice blog post.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi Aishah,

      Thank you. 🙂
There are two kind of Merapi Tour.
First, Merapi sunrise by a jeep.
But, this kind of tour can not reach the summit of Merapi.
It just explore villages area around and closest to Merapi volcano and watch the sunrise.

The second tour is hiking the volcano, reach the summit and watch the sunrise.
      http://www.yogya-backpacker.com/merapi-volcano-gunung-merapi/

      It’s two different things.
Make sure you choose the right tour.

  16. Joshua

    Hi!

My friend and I (2pax) will be in Jogja for 5-days, and is interested to visit Mt. Merapi! So thankful that u have this page of references 🙂

Allow me to clarify the following:
    1) this spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1N_iaOB9nqNrzQmAUnwcXuOtKKoAhc_pGw1z3d0fnDyM/edit#gid=1822508046) is for the shared trip to and fro merapi right? I assume it’s not under the jeep package!

    2) If we intend to go for Package 5 (Sunrise): Rp400.000 per jeep. Duration: about 150 minutes. U mentioned that we have to reach Merapi by 0430H, how long does it take from the Jogja city to Mt Merapi? Is there any surcharges on top of the RP400.000?

    3) Similarly, for the sunrise package, u mentioned the need to book. Hence do I contact MGM jeep operator: +6281229915857 (Mr Eko) straight for the booking?

I look forward to your reply! Thanks 🙂

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi,

1). That’s for Merapi area or mountain side under the jeep package.
The tour will drop you at Merapi jeep basecamp.
Something that you have to understand is Merapi jeep can not reach the top of the volcano.
It just visiting the area around Merapi volcano such as ruined village, bunker, mass tomb, etc.
But, it can’t reach the top or the summit of Merapi volcano.
If you want to reach the summit, then you have to hiking.
Here the post about Merapi hiking:
      http://www.yogya-backpacker.com/merapi-volcano-gunung-merapi/

2). It’s not reach Merapi volcano.
      But, reach Merapi jeep basecamp.
For Merapi sunrise by a jeep, you have to reach the Merapi Jeep basecamp on 4.30-4.45 am.
So, you can catch the sunrise on the right time.
From Jogja city to Merapi Jeep basecamp it will take 30-45 minutes.

3). Yes, you can contact or whatsapp mas Eko.

      Cheers.

But, IDR 300k is Merapi jeep tour for local.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hello,

This coming tuesday is Indonesian holiday.
      It’s Nyepi day.
It will be crowded and long queue for Merapi jeep.
I recommend you to contact Mr Eko first.
Well, i just whatsapp him a few second ago.

      Cheers.

Hi ! We’d like to book a trip for Sunrise Merapi on the 19th may. We are 2. I didn’t understand well how does it work, as i am not a native english speaker. Could you help me? And how does it cost ?

    Thank you very much

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi,

Well, i already provide the information so detail actually.
Do you want sunrise at Merapi by hiking or by riding a jeep?
      Please, read the article carefully.
I already provide the info how much it cost actually.

  20. Mikal

    Hi
    Great info on your website.
Is this trip for adults only or can it be done safely with a 3 year old child?

And a second question. How is Jogya right after the Aiud Fitr.
We are thinking about arriving the 27. of june 2017 but do you think we should postphone it a couple of days.
    thx.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      Hi,

I don’t recommend for 3 years old child to ride the Merapi jeep (Lava Tour),
because it will be super shaky.

Arriving Jogja in Eid Fitr is not good idea.
Jogja will be very crowded on 3 days before and after.
Traffic jam in every where till the village in some spots.
That’s why we don’t provide tours on 3 days before and 3 days after.
You should postphone it for a couple days after to avoid crowded.

  21. Rafeek

    Dear

Great information you have provided this site for who love to take merapy tour..

Can you please provide the starting point of this Merapi tour by 4×4 jeep.

    1. kunzyogya Post author

      You’re welcome.
There are so many Jeep operator actually,
it spread from Kaliurang, Kalikuning and Cangkringan.
I recommend you to take Merapi tour by jeep in front of Museum Gunung Merapi (MGM).
Here the benefit if you start from that point:
      1. Longer track than other tour.
      2. Visit and across the Kalikuning river.
      3. The driver bring HT radio. So, if something happened they can ask help to the other crew.
But, on the weekend and Indonesian holiday this tour will be very crowded.
